It was certainly nicer than La Ramblas in Barcelona. We caught all sorts of local transport, again no problems, including after dark. We took a handful of taxis and suffered no incidents. Yes, of course take sensible precautions, don't walk down dark alleyways in any city , hide the valuables you need to take out with you.
Don't flash your money about. Ignore absurd advice about trying to disguise the fact you are a tourist, go out and experience Naples and don't be put off by the appearance of what is a fantastic city. Wonder if it might be anything to do with my imaginary large mafia presence. Maybe you were in Rome, Florence etc.
Since the presence of army and police in Italian cities has been increased because of that. Police and soldiers you see around stations and governement buildings in Naples are there for terrorist attacks like the others all over Italy. Cops in service against the Camorra work like the mobsters they fight: you can't recognize them.
I can see an army armored vehicle from my window, I'm afraid it's there for the Jewish Temple 2 blocks down the street and not for the notorious Piedmontese Barolo mafia. Sorry NapOrsoCapo71 but I add - if some readers didn't understand your irony - that Piedmont has actually nothing to see with mafia.
Italy is usually considered not the first target in europe for a terrorism attack, anyway in the last months this plan for a militarization has been started in all italy and can be increased in specific days or cities. In these days for exemple because there will be a meeting between merkel-hollande-renzi and they will pass through in naples they could have doubled it I stand corrected on the reason for the army and police presence, my assumption was based on the fact the army have been deployed before to deal with mafia-related issues. For the record, I never saw any army or police presence at pompeii or herculaneum.
What I did see in Naples was graffiti covering what seems like every inch of wall and yes, some of it is incredible , I saw huge piles of rubbish, and I don't mean overflowing bins I saw street markets consisting of a few blankets laid on the ground with tatty merchandise on them, I saw kids who looked about 8 years old driving scooters, helmetless, down busy streets.
Daily Noon Briefing
I saw trains with so much graffiti on them I doubt you could see out the windows. Combine this with all I have read about the mafia there, the poverty, the unemployment rate, the drop-out rate from schools, the fact a part of Napoli was labelled the biggest open-air drugs market in the world sorry, cant remember the source, think it was in reference to Scampia.

How many western Europen cities have turf wars between rival gang factions that result in thousands of deaths over decades? To me, Napoli was very very different from any other Europen city I've been to before, and I've been to a good few. I went there for that reason and I loved it, I will definitely return.

Others are, of course, free to disagree. None of us are claiming that Naples is a Disney city, she clearly has issues that go back decades or more. We could debate endlessly the reasons but that's not particularly helpful on a travel forum. It's not particularly helpful in any situation unless the participants are prepared to do something to change things as a result of the discussion.
I doubt if anyone meant to attack the OP or his point of view, but rather to challenge opinions presented as if they were facts. Continuing to point out data that seems to support your original premise while simultaneously apologizing for the misrepresentation makes your concession sound disingenuous, at best. The lack of military guards at Pompei does not mean that their presence in Naples is related to the original premise.
Big logic flaw there. I posted here not so much in response to the OP but, obviously, I did to some extent but more for all the many people who read these forums but never post - they just read them - I think it's a good idea for those folks to have a chance to read about various experiences and perspectives.
There were numerous claims made with no substantive sources for the claims in the original posts; that is always the sort of thing that can cause people to wholly misunderstand a situation. If the sources exist, including links to them is helpful to anyone considering a trip -. Nowhere in Italy - or anywhere - is like a theme park. If you read the news about Italy you will see they have many of the same issues faced by people in every city on earth. To me, travel can be more rewarding if one has a good overall grasp of realistic expectations and not the brochure vision of what many people think Italy is like -.
Southern Italy and, the country overall - including Naples is suffering economically and that reality is reflected in various ways. I don't mind any of it because it is real life - and the city is pulsating with a range of realities from sublime to heartbreaking. As with anywhere - unique issues based on the specific circumstances, culture, etc in an area either present a visitor with someplace engaging, exciting, stimulating or bores them to death, and everything in between.
Fear is an unfortunate byproduct of misinformation - as are generalizations or opinions imparted as facts, etc. To each their own - really - I would hope anyone considering traveling anywhere in the world takes a lot of time in advance in read up on it - not just guidebooks, but current news, history, whatever is of interest. So yes, a huge mafia presence.
